A greener soul

Today marks the 2nd anniversary of my journey as a vegetarian.

Exactly 2 years ago, I vowed to stay away from the temptations of meat and fish forever. Since then, I never look back.

Langkawi, Kedah

It’s probably the most courageous and startling decision I’ve ever made in my life. I truly understand that this would mean no more dim sum, bak kut teh, seafood, or Kenny Rogers Roasters sessions with my family and friends in the future. However, I have no regrets. In order to pursue a more meaningful life, I must somehow learn to make a sacrifice.

Langkawi, Kedah

And I survived. For 1 year plus, I’d been a dedicated lacto vegetarian. I then switched to lacto-ovo vegetarianism a few months ago in order to better adapt to an environment where vegetarian food is not easily available, especially around the area where I’m studying.

And who says vegetarian food is bland, boring, and tasteless? Thanks to the evolution of today’s vegetarian cuisine and the creativity of vegetarian chefs, I’m still able to enjoy my all-time favourite dishes, which I find absolutely delicious albeit being vegetarian versions.

Vegetarian dishes

Even some of the world’s greatest and most illustrious personalities were vegetarians.

Famous vegetarians: Leonardo da Vinci; Albert Einstein; Mahatma Gandhi; Abraham Lincoln

Look familiar? What about these…

Famous vegetarians: Simon Cowell; David Duchovny & Gillian Anderson; Christian Bale

And erm… Him.

Famous vegetarian: Adolf Hitler

Cheers to your significant decision to be a vegetarian.

I am not a vegetarian, but I am adopting a diet with less meat (particularly red meat).

Indeed, there’s quite a lot of great vegetarina choices around. Yummy.

  6. doreen | November 8th, 2008 | 11:29

Good on you and keep it up! I love vegetables but I doubt I have the courage to ditch those seafood and meat.

You become a vegetarian for religious reasons?

Yes, the choices are so many nowadays! And they taste good too. :D

doreen: It’s okay, as long as you’re happy with it. ;)

Not entirely, but it did play quite a role in my ultimate decision to go vegetarian.

    angeles: Thanks!

It sounds all this food must be delicious! The Dalaï Lama isn’t vegetarian. I heard onetime he said he hadn’t the courageous but you should present these pictures to him! I am sure he would change!
don’t like Hitler, you know! Even on a picture! He was perhaps vegetarian but a butcher on his own way.

  14. ehon | November 9th, 2008 | 13:03

well done!! :) my agree with u it isn’t an easy decision to switch to full-time vegan.

i can’t find a reason to and if given a really good reason, i would. but with my lifestyle, i need a heck lot more protein and based on my metabolic calculations, i am still in need of more meat.

  15. Zhu | November 9th, 2008 | 14:37

I barely eat any meat, just because I’m not a fan of it. I do like fish though and I would find it hard to renounce it completely…

But a diet of veggies doesn’t scare me. I do think eating too much meat doesn’t do any good, to us and to the environment.

    Good job for you anyway!

  16. kyh | November 9th, 2008 | 16:39

claudie: They were delicious, yes! :D

Most Tibetan Buddhists are not vegetarians because of the environment they live in. Their homeland is surrounded by tall mountains and visited by harsh winters, thus it’s hard to grow vegetables.

It’s funny that Hitler valued animal welfare more than the lives of the millions he killed.

ehon: Veganism is a long way to go. I still love my milk and cheese!

I need a lot of protein too, thus milk and tofu are my reliable sources.

Zhu: I find it incredible that there are actually people who dislike meat. I always thought that meat is so intoxicating that one could never have enough of it.

    Thanks! ;)

  20. Khengsiong | November 10th, 2008 | 10:54

Have you gained weight or lose weight after becoming a vegetarian?

A friend of mine actually gained weight after she turned vegetarian. Chinese vegetarian food is too oily and not exactly healthy. (The food shown in the first pic is exactly what I mean.) I suggest that you try salad (not so much dressing) or Western style.

  21. kyh | November 10th, 2008 | 13:06

    cbenc12: Thank you!

Khengsiong: My weight has been more or less the same as before. If I manage to gain some extra pounds, I’d be so super excited because that’s what I want! LOL!

The food shown in the 1st pic isn’t oily at all. The oil you see is the gravy, and it’s delicious! :D

  22. LM | November 10th, 2008 | 17:19

Healthy option! Have you tried Indian vegetarian meals? They are very yummy!

  24. Linda | November 10th, 2008 | 22:34

I’ve considered trying to be a vegetarian but never seem to stick it out. Plus, there is no way my husband would do it and there’s no way I’m cooking two meals-which probably tells you a lot about any dedication I might have to trying it.

Big big congrats on being vegetarian for the 2nd year!

I tried, and failed miserably the last time. I became very ill but persisted for another month until my body gave up. :(

Have plans to try again, but this time will have a better and more balanced ‘menu’.

adolph hitler a vegetarian?? no wayyy…

good thing you manage to stick to it. here’s to a couple more years of vegetarian status to you! ;-)

  31. Bas - Istanbul Expat | November 17th, 2008 | 9:04

I became a vegetarian about one year ago. I had played with the idea, but it was never viable for me. I ate meat 3 times per day and I always said that I loved meat to much to ever become a vegetarian (something I hear a lot whenever I say I’m a vegetarian).

Finally I became a vegetarian after seeing a film called Earthlings, which is about the way we treat fellow animals on this planet. A link to this film can be found in the right sidebar of my blog (look for the brown square banner). After seeing that, eating meat felt completely wrong. So I simply couldn’t. I thought “eh, then I’ll be a vegetarian for a while” thinking it would last a month… Now I know it’s easier to become a vegetarian than to stop being one. For me, at least.

As for Hitler… his vegetarianism is disputed. It’s more likely that he was what we refer to nowadays as a ‘meat reducer’.

“While Hitler reduced his meat consumption, he may have not eliminated it entirely, with culinary accounts indicating a sporadic preference for sausage, squab, liver dumplings, ham, and caviar.”

There’s a big article about this on Wikipedia. Go and have a look: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vegetarianism_of_Adolf_Hitler

_butt: It’s disputed, but most vegetarian websites have included his name in the list of famous vegetarians. ;)

Bas: I feel disgusted at those inhumane treatments of farm animals. And yeah… It’s easier to become a vegetarian than to stop being one!

And thanks for the link. I shall read it up after my finals. ;)

I’m on my long term holiday actually. Working temporary in Genting highlands. to lean a better speaking skill. But it’s really disappointed for the accommodation over here. Study in UTAR, engineering. But maybe i’ll switch course or school soon. You are having architecture right? location? I really like your blog, cuz’ of a lot of things can learn.

More and more Americans have come to embrace vegetarianism and veganism. It’s a positive phenomenon that what is generally taunted as the world’s fattest nation is becoming increasingly health-conscious than ever before.
